From The Projects To Politics-Interview with Louis Stokes

Project Description

Sounds will engage teachers and their students in a rich multimedia experience, where teachers will become experts at using sound in the classroom. Teachers will hear America’s voices and music; examining how the sounds of America have changed as the very fabric of the nation shifted from fields to factories, from peace to war, from politics as back slapping to politics as media performance, from a producer orientation to consumerism, from horse power to electric power, from music organized in folk traditions to music oriented to mass audiences, from a society governed by seasons to one where day dominated night and sound conquered silence. Using a variety of multimedia materials and by collecting, as well as analyzingoral histories, teachers will do more than gain a better appreciation of the past. They will hone their pedagogical skills, learn new ways of bringing technology to the classroom, and enrich their students’lives and experiences. Moreover, teacher participants will become master teachers by creating lessonmaterials and by mentoring colleagues and other regional teachers through face-to-face interactionsand through interactive distance-learning meetings.
